HEARTLAND DERMATOLOGY
The KAT Residency Program at Heartland Dermatology.
The KAT (Kansas Access Track) Program seeks to contribute to providing accessible dermatologic care throughout Kansas.
A RESIDENCY PROGRAM DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE AND GUIDE PROSPECTIVE DERMATOLOGY STUDENTS FROM THE HEARTLAND TO LEARN, GROW AND PRACTICE LOCALLY.
Workforce data in the Heartland suggests that Kansas’ access to qualified skin health professionals is diminishing as local providers begin to transition into retirement. Our communities are at risk of becoming more underserved in an area of healthcare that is so important — dermatology. Heartland Dermatology has been committed to a solution to this workforce challenge.
Rather than simply remaining complicit about the imbalance of supply and demand for these professionals, we are actively contributing to the future pipeline of practicing dermatology professionals. We feel it is our duty.
The Kansas Access Track (KAT) Residency is a rural/underserved residency track designed in collaboration with Saint Louis University (SLU). Heartland Dermatology is uniquely positioned to anchor such a program in a way that will be beneficial for the communities in Kansas foremost, as well as to striving to provide accessible care throughout Kansas, including many underserved areas.
About the KAT Residency Program
Established in 2023 with our first participating resident, the Kansas Access Track (KAT) is a rural/underserved residency track designed in collaboration with Saint Louis University. This unique residency program is designed to encourage and guide dermatology residents to serve underserved and rural communities in Kansas. Prospective applicants interested in this track will train nine months of each year as SSM Health/Saint Louis University and three months of each year at Heartland Dermatology in Wichita, Kansas. Upon completion of their training, residents commit to work in an underserved area in Kansas for two years.

Kevin Brough, MD
HEARTLAND KAT FACULTY
As a Texas native, Dr. Brough lived his home state from birth through the end of medical school. He moved to Minnesota to train at Mayo Clinic, where he completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Dermatology (boarded in both), and fellowship in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology.
With his wife and four children, Dr. Brough decided to come to Kansas to practice after seeing what a great need there was for skin surgeons. He was looking for areas where he could both work in a field he is truly passionate about, as well as where he could safely and happily raise a family. After the huge need for dermatologic care in Central and Western Kansas, he knew Heartland was exactly where he needed to be.
Dr. Brough enjoys sporting, outdoor activities, and spending time with his wonderful family.
